Seattle agrees to terms with TE Chris Baker - 03-13-2010

The Seattle Seahawks have finally stepped into the free agent marketplace, agreeing to terms with TE Chris Baker. A team spokesman confirmed a deal had been agreed to on Saturday, although the team did not release terms of the contract. Baker spent last season as a backup in New England, but previously was a starter for the New York Jets. Last season with the Patriots, Baker had just 14 catches and two touchdowns. His best season came in 2007 with the Jets when he caught 41 passes for 409 yards and three scores. He spent his first seven years in the league with the Jets.
Browns, Delhomme agree to 2-year deal - 03-13-2010

Jake Delhomme has a new NFL home, and the Cleveland Browns have another new quarterback. Delhomme, released last week by the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Browns, whose quarterback position has been nothing short of a merry-go-round of players since the club returned as an expansion team 11 years ago. Since 1999, the Browns have had eight different opening-week quarterbacks. Delhomme is coming off his worst season as a pro. He threw 18 interceptions and the Panthers decided to cut him despite still owing him more than $12 million. Delhomme went 58-40 as a starter with Carolina, leading the franchise to its lone Super Bowl appearance to end the 2003 season.
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli suspended for 2010 - 03-12-2010

Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was suspended Friday for the upcoming season by coach Chip Kelly after pleading guilty to second-degree burglary in the theft of a pair of laptops and a guitar from a campus fraternity. Masoli, who had been mentioned as a potential Heisman candidate, will remain on scholarship with the Ducks. "He does have a redshirt season available to him if he chooses to do that," Kelly said. Kelly announced the suspension just hours after Masoli appeared in Lane County Circuit Court to answer to the burglary charge. Kelly, who has come under fire for some of his disciplinary decisions, also meted out punishment for running back LaMichael James and place-kicker Rob Beard. "I am extremely disappointed anytime any of our players fall short of our expectations that have been clearly outlined for them in advance on numerous occasions, and this is especially true regarding their roles within the community," Kelly said. "Their accountability for their actions is paramount and any tainting of the reputation of the University of Oregon and this football program will not be tolerated." Masoli pleaded guilty as part of a deal that reduced his charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. Former Ducks receiver Garrett Embry pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of second-degree burglary as well. Both were sentenced to 12 months of probation and 140 hours of community service. Together they must also pay $5,000 restitution. Masoli threw for 2,147 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He also rushed for 668 yards and 13 touchdowns, leading Oregon to the school's first Rose Bowl appearance since 1995. Kelly's action was the latest twist to the Ducks' offseason of disarray. Beard was placed on probation after entering his plea. Linebacker Kiko Alonso pleaded not guilty to drunken driving charges in Eugene Municipal Court last week. Kelly suspended Alonso for the 2010 season upon learning of the arrest. Defensive end Matt Simms was dismissed by Kelly after he was cited on assault charges last month. Simms pleaded guilty to physical harassment for striking a man he thought had beaten Beard. Receiver Jamere Holland was dismissed from the team after posting vulgar comments and criticizing Kelly on the Facebook social networking site. Kelly, who made his debut as a head coach last season, was questioned after he brought back running back LeGarrette Blount early from a season-long suspension.
Larry Johnson signs with Redskins - 03-12-2010

The Redskins have signed RB Larry Johnson to join Clinton Portis in the Redskins' backfield, a league source confirmed. Johnson would give the Redskins a strong runner in the backfield to complement Portis, who's expected to begin the season as Redskins' starter. The Redskins confirmed the signing with a 6 p.m. news release. The source said Johnson agreed to a three-year deal that will pay him up to $12M. "We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league," Coach Mike Shanahan said in the release. "Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield." His last 1,000-yard season was 2006, when he rushed for a career-high 1,789 yards and had 17 touchdowns. "There hasn't been a real good running back tandem in the league [for a while]," Johnson told ESPN 980 on Thursday night. "There's always been one guy or three guys. It'd be just like how me and Priest Holmes was way back in the day. It'd be nice to be able to play aside somebody like that." While Johnson, 30, had complimentary things to say about Shanahan, the Redskins' coach left few doubts about his feelings for Johnson. "Obviously I've watched him from afar for years," Shanahan said. "I coached Larry in the Pro Bowl. I like Larry. I'm a big fan of his."
Javhid Best a 1st round lock - 03-12-2010

Apparently, Jahvid Best did everything he needed to do at the combine because he was told not to do anything at Pro Day. Although he isn't completely happy with his combine-best 4.35s 40-yard dash for running backs at the combine, there was no need to prove he had the speed that everyone is already aware of. Best was at Memorial Stadium prepared to perform running back drills, but when the time came he was told they [the scouts] didn't need him to do them -- a sign that he's a lock for the first round in April. "I don't know how I feel about it," said Best about the position drills being scrapped. "I was ready to go, so I definitely feel a little disappointed. But that's good news again." Best has workouts scheduled with the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins later this month, and while he doesn't care which team drafts him, he didn't shy away from telling reporters that his favorite team is the local Oakland Raiders. With the release of Fargas late last week and the speed he's shown, it's not entirely impossible that he could get that wish with the eigth pick of the draft.
Eagles sign WR Hank Baskett - 03-12-2010

The Eagles today announced they have signed WR Hank Baskett to a one-year contract. "I'm glad we had a chance to get Hank back in Philadelphia," said head coach Andy Reid. "Not only has he proven himself to be a productive receiver, but he also does a solid job on special teams. He's a team player and his main focus has and always will be on helping his team win games. On top of all that, he's a quality person." Now in his second stint in Philadelphia, Baskett (6-4, 220) spent the majority of the 2009 season with the Indianapolis Colts after being released by the Eagles on September 15. He appeared in 12 regular season games (11 with Colts, one with Eagles), notching five receptions for 34 yards. He also played in all three playoff games for the Colts, including Super Bowl 44.
Tebow Below Average on Wonderlic - 03-12-2010

While former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow wowed evaluators with his on-field performance at the NFL combine last month, he scored a 22 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing an NFL source. The 12-minute test measures an individual's learning and problem-solving abilities. According to the Post, the average Wonderlic score for an NFL quarterback is 24. The newspaper also reported that the quarterback prospects in Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest rankings on ESPN.com -- Sam Bradford of Oklahoma (36), Colt McCoy of Texas (25) and Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame (23) -- scored higher than Tebow.
Watson to the Browns - 03-12-2010

After spending much of Thursday negotiating with the Seahawks and Browns, free-agent tight end Ben Watson opted to accept Cleveland's offer. The Browns filled a gaping offensive hole by signing Watson to a three-year, $12 million contract that includes $6.35 million in guaranteed money, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Patriots never seemed overly aggressive when it came to returning Watson to the fold despite their large void at tight end. They have Robbie Agnone and Rob Myers at the position, and neither has played in a regular-season game. Watson visited with Seattle on Monday and was in Cleveland on Thursday. The Browns didn't let him get away, as Watson signed the contract before boarding his return flight Friday morning.
Hill Given Permission to Seek Trade - 03-12-2010

The 49ers have given backup quarterback Shaun Hill permission to seek a trade, said a source late Thursday, just days after the club reached a contract agreement with free-agent David Carr to take Hill's place on the depth chart. Hill does not appear to fit into the 49ers' plans after the club agreed to terms with Carr on a two-year, $6.25 million contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus. The 49ers now appear set with Carr, Alex Smith and Nate Davis as their three quarterbacks. The source said the 49ers might be waiting on the return of Carr's signed contract before making any move with Hill. In giving Hill permission to seek a trade, he is allowed to speak with teams around the league to begin the process of finding a new team - either through a trade or as a free agent, if the 49ers release him. With the value teams place on draft picks, it's appears unlikely the 49ers will be able to trade Hill, especially when teams know he is likely to be released.
LeGarette Blount fails to attend pro day - 03-11-2010

LeGarrette Blount, a controversial running back who has been trying to restore his image, was a no-show at Oregon's pro day Thursday. Blount flashed some impressive skills at Senior Bowl practices in late January. He also showcased outstanding quickness at the NFL Scouting Combine two weeks ago, finishing third among all running backs in the three-cone drill. He measured at 6-foot and 241 pounds at the combine. At both events, Blount was committed to showing NFL teams and the media that he isn't a problem child after his reputation took two huge hits last year. First, he was suspended in February for reportedly missing offseason team meetings. Then he punched a Boise State player following Oregon's Sept. 4 road loss. The punch resulted in Blount being suspended for 10 games before he returned to play in Oregon's final two contests. Blount was contrite while discussing the episode with the media at the combine, but choosing not to participate in Oregon's pro day likely will prompt more questions. Safety T.J. Ward also was absent, leaving just TE Ed Dickson among the top Oregon prospects to work out for 20 NFL team representatives indoors on FieldTurf. Dickson (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.64 and 4.61 seconds, and he also had a 33-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, 2-inch broad jump and 25 repetitions in the bench press at 225 pounds. He stood on his short-shuttle and three-cone drill times from the combine. He also ran positional drills.
Chiefs sign WR Jerheme Urban - 03-11-2010

Free-agent wide receiver Jerheme Urban has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Terms of the deal were not immediately known. Urban played for Chiefs coach Todd Haley when he was an assistant for the Arizona Cardinals.
Bengals sign Antonio Bryant - 03-11-2010

The Bengals have agreed to a four-year deal with WR Antonio Bryant, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The Enquirer reported the deal is for four years and worth $28 million. Bryant played the last two seasons with Tampa. He caught 83 passes for 1,248 yards in 2008 and was tagged as the Bucs' franchise player last year. He caught just 39 passes for 600 yards last year.
Ravens reach 2 year agreement with Mason - 03-10-2010

The Ravens have reached a two-year agreement with wide receiver Derrick Mason. Mason, 36, who was an unrestricted free agent, has been the Ravens' top wide receiver for the past five seasons. Bringing back Mason is another step in the Ravens' effort to upgrade their passing game. Mason is part of a unit that includes new acquisitions Anquan Boldin and Donte' Stallworth.
Broncos sign NT Jamal Williams - 03-09-2010

This move will likely hurt San Diego fans more than it will help the Denver Broncos. Jamal Williams -- one of the great all-time Chargers -- is now a Denver Bronco. He just signed a three-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Chargers cut Williams last week because he was due a hefty bonus. Continuing its focus on revamping the defensive line, Denver's acquisition of Williams is intriguing. The 6-foot-3, 348-pound Williams was one of the game's premier nose tackles. He was a great run-stuffer and anchor to a fine defense. Denver defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely is no stranger to Williams' greatness. He coached him in San Diego. Williams was known as a big-time Bronco killer. He ate up Denver's small offensive linemen. The Denver line was usually effective using its zone blocking schemes, but Williams always had success against Denver. Still, there are plenty of risks in this deal. Williams will turn 34 next month and he missed all but one game last season with a triceps injury. He has also had knee issues. But if Denver uses Williams in a rotation and limits him 15 to 25 snaps a game he could be effective. Denver has also added defensive linemen Justin Bannan and Jarvis Green. With all of these additions, the Broncos likely will not be looking for defensive linemen in the early stages of the draft. The Williams deal can help if he can stay healthy. Even if Williams' better days are behind him, the sight of him in blue and orange will likely be crushing to San Diego fans.
Giants Sign QB Jim Sorgi - 03-09-2010

Jim Sorgi will continue to back up a Manning next year. But he'll hold a clipboard behind Eli Manning of the Giants. Brei said Sorgi, who's played with the Colts since 2004 but ended last season on IR, was "very excited" to join the Giants. The Colts cut him last Friday.Sorgi's agent, Matt Brei, told the Newark Star-Ledger on Tuesday that the Giants' concerns about Sorgi's shoulder were allayed by Dr. James Andrews, among other doctors.
Chiefs Sign Thomas Jones - 03-09-2010
Browns release Derek Anderson - 03-09-2010

The Cleveland Browns released former Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson, the team announced Tuesday. The move comes just one day after the team acquired Seneca Wallace in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. New team president Mike Holmgren said it would be a "long shot" that both Anderson and Brady Quinn would be on the roster. A major reason for choosing Quinn was Anderson's contract required a $2 million roster bonus this month and a $7.45 million salary in 2010. "I want to thank Derek for everything that he gave to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last five years," Browns coach Eric Mangini said in a statement. "He did everything we asked of him and it was a pleasure to coach such a competitive person. I want to wish him all the best in the future." Anderson had his best season with the Browns in 2007, when he threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns and led the team to 10 victories. He received a three-year extension with Cleveland but never lived up to expectations after that point. Cleveland remains unsure of its starting quarterback for next season. The team has been very active in searching for potential trades and will likely continue to do so.
Raiders cut Javon Walker and Greg Ellis - 03-09-2010

Like they did last year, the Raiders are trying to right past financial wrongs. The Raiders just cut receiver Javon Walker and defensive end Greg Ellis. Neither release was a surprise. Both players are aging and expensive. But it is a reminder of past mistakes, especially in Walker's case. Walker will go down as one of the biggest free agents mistakes in the history of the league. Denver cut Walker after the 2007 season because he has major health issues with his knees and totally lost his ability to separate from defenders. Many league observers thought Walker could get a one-year, $1 million deal at best. Stunning the league, Oakland jumped on Walker, giving him a six-year, $55 million deal with $16 million in guaranteed money. What a bad decision that was. Walker's injury issues continued in Oakland. He never made an impact. Walker, 31, played in a total of 11 games for the Raiders in two seasons. He had 15 catches in 2008 and none in 2009. The Raiders still owe him more than $2 million. This signing was a disaster. There was no chance Oakland would bring him back for 2010, but his release still stings, because it is a reminder of how little he gave the Raiders. Ellis is simply a case of Oakland trying to make something happen with a player who was too beat up. Ellis, 34, battled injury problems last season. He managed to get seven sacks, but is probably too hurt to continue playing. His release probably doesn't bother Ellis too much. The former Cowboy repeatedly questioned his Oakland teammates' desire and approach during the team's 5-11 2009 season.
Randle El rejoins the Steelers - 03-08-2010

Among 10 players Washington released last week on the eve free agency, Randle El was the first former Redskin to find a new job when he agreed to terms Monday night with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Randle El began his career with Pittsburgh, which was among the reasons he re-signed with them instead of continuing contract talks with several of the other teams that pursued him. Pittsburgh signed Randle El to a 3-year deal. The Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots were among the teams that expressed interest in signing Randle El.
Bucs Trade for Reggie Brown - 03-08-2010

As suitors for wide receiver Antonio Bryant began to gather Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took their first step toward replacing the dispatched playmaker. In their first move of the free-agency signing period, the Bucs traded a sixth-round draft pick in 2011 to the Philadelphia Eagles for former starting receiver Reggie Brown. Brown, 29, has 177 catches for 2,574 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career, but only nine of those catches came last season as Brown was edged out of the Eagles lineup by rookie Jeremy Maclin and second-year pro DeSean Jackson. Brown comes to the Bucs with four years remaining on a contract that is slated to pay him $1.2 million in 2010; $1.3 million in 2011, $1.7 million in 2012, $3.2 million in 2013 and $3.8 million in 2014.
Browns trade for QB Seneca Wallace - 03-08-2010

Mike Holmgren is already making deals with his former team. The Seattle Seahawks traded backup quarterback Seneca Wallace to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2011 undisclosed draft pick. A Seahawks spokesman confirmed the deal Monday night. Wallace spent his entire seven-year career with the Seahawks, and was always a favorite of Holmgren's when he was Seattle's coach. Now the Browns' team president, Holmgren has brought Wallace to Cleveland. Wallace's best season was 2008 when he started eight games in Holmgren's last season and threw for 1,532 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wallace started two games last season while starter Matt Hasselbeck was injured.
Chiefs Resign Chambers - 03-08-2010

Kansas City has locked up free agent wide receiver Chris Chambers, re-signing him to a three-year deal worth up to $15 million, according to a league source. The source said the deal included $5.9 million in guaranteed money. Chambers led the team in receiving yards (608) and yards per catch (16.9) in 2009. He also tied Dwayne Bowe for the most receiving touchdowns with four.
Steelers sign Arnaz Battle - 03-08-2010

The Steelers have signed former 49er WR Arnaz Battle. Details have not been released. Battle also played primarily special teams the last two seasons. A seven-year veteran of the San Francisco 49ers, Battle was drafted in the sixth round out of Notre Dame in 2003. His career peaked during the 2006-07 seasons when he caught 109 passes for 1,286 yards. Injuries slowed Battle in 2008, and last season he caught only five passes for 40 yards. His primary job last season was returning punts, but he averaged only 2.9 yards in 21 returns.
49ers Sign David Carr - 03-07-2010

ree agent quarterback David Carr and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed on a new contract. Details of the new deal have yet to be released, but the report at the moment says that it's a two-year deal. The contract is expected to be finalized on Monday. Carr was drafted by the expansion Houston Texans #1 overall in 2002 but has struggled to find consistent success throughout his career. Carr spent the last two seasons backing up Eli Manning of the New York Giants. The Giants, Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns had also expressed interest in Carr.
Eagles to Pick Up Vick Roster Bonus - 03-07-2010

The Eagles have informed Michael Vick's agent, Joel Segal, that they will pick up the QB's 2010 roster bonus this week, according to a league source. Vick is due a $1.5 million roster bonus by Wednesday. The Eagles are carrying three quarterbacks who have started in the NFL - with success - but they haven't attempted to trade any of them. Should a team offer value for Vick at some point - a pick in at least the second round - perhaps a deal could materialize. But a team source has continued to maintain that the Eagles have every expectation of Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Vick all being in training camp.
